Crime Prevention Unit
The Fall River Police Department's Crime Prevention Unit is currently staffed by one Detective Sergeant and
three detectives. This unit carries out a number of community oriented programs, as well as all of the
background investigations for applicants of taxi, liquor and restaurant licenses.
Bear Down On Drugs
This is a three day drug prevention program presented to all fifth grade students in the City of Fall River.
With three local businesses as sponsors, the program airs essays written by the students on a local radio station,
provides them with anti-drug materials, and a pizza party at the conclusion of the program.
Alcohol Awareness Program
For several years the Fall River Police Department and the Fall River Public School System have collaborated
on programs of prevention and education. One of these programs, the Alcohol Awareness Program, is given to all
sixth graders in the system. It is a four day presentation on the dangers and consequences of alcohol abuse.
S.P.E.A.K. Program
Safety, Protection, Education, Assertiveness for Kids (SPEAK) is program aimed at first and fourth graders in
the schools in Fall River. The first graders presentation is geared toward "Stranger Danger" issues and helping
them to define Personal Space. The fourth graders receive a presentation centering on child abuse recognition
and prevention. Social workers from the Child Protection Agency in Fall River assist in this presentation.
The Crime Prevention Unit also gives personal safety presentations to senior citizen, school and community
groups, as well as conducting security surveys for local businesses. With the ongoing participation of community
boards such as the Child Protection Agency, the Alcoholism Council of Greater Fall River, the Fall River Chamber
of Commerce Public Safety Committee, the Family Services Association, the Domestic Violence Task Force and the
Children's Trust Fund, the Crime Prevention Unit continues to use every means at their disposal to accomplish
their goals.
