Traffic Enforcement Unit
Chief Ronald J. Andrade established the Motor Vehicle Enforcement Unit on November 13, 1988 at the request
of Deputy Chief Richard J. Thorpe to address increasing traffic law violations in the City of Fall River.
The original unit comprised of (1) Sergeant and (4) Police Officers.

The Motor Vehicle Enforcement Unit has the following vehicles assigned:
- 4–2000 FLHTPI Harley Davidson Police Motorcycles
- 2-Marked police cruisers with dash-mount radar units
- In 2001, the Fall River Police Department purchased a Speed Monitoring Awareness Radar Trailer, which is
used in different neighborhoods throughout the City to educate the motoring public.
Some of the duties of the members of the Motor Vehicle Enforcement Unit are:
- Speed Enforcement
- Enforcement of traffic laws
- Accident investigation
- Parking violation enforcement
- Funeral escorts
- Dignity escorts
- Parades
- Special events
- Drunk driving roadblocks
- Seatbelt checkpoints
- Provide assistance at accident and crime scenes
- Enforcement grants through the Governor’s Highway Safety Bureau
The Unit has also played an active role with the local chapter of Mother’s Against Drunk
Driving in preventing drunk driving accidents and fatalities.
