Auxiliary Police Unit
The Auxiliary Police Unit was established in the Fall River Police Department in 1950. Today we are
one of the largest and most active in the State. Personnel are on duty every week. The unit comprises 45
volunteer members who assist the Department with assignments from the Chief of Police. Duties are traffic
control and direction at parades and processions, also crime prevention and security details at community
and charitable events. They also assist the Emergency Management Director of the City during
emergencies.
Recruiting information may be obtained by contacting Lieutenant Charles J. Cullen, Commander, at
508–676–8511, ex. 173. Eligibility requirements are U.S.A. citizens age 18 to 65, residents of
Fall River, Freetown, Somerset, Swansea, and Westport only, no criminal felony record, current Massachusetts
driver's license, excellent health and physical fitness, good moral character, high school graduate or general
education equivalency certificate, and successfully complete a through background investigation and interview
board. Weekend availability is imperative and a minimum of 4 volunteer hours per week including a monthly
meeting and training class is mandatory. Successful candidates must successfully complete the Auxiliary
Police Officer Basic Training Program for recruits. Instruction will be classroom, field, and on job training.
Upon appointment equipment and uniforms are issued by the Department.
